Images for our presentations on resources

Posted by: Mr. Rhys, TMS on: May 13, 2009

We are researching renewable and non-renewable resources we use for our energy needs.

We have written a script, and we are using key words to search the Internet for images that can help us communicate what we’ve learned. We will put our key words into search engines like Google.com, Askforkids.com, or CreativeCommons.org.

For the images we might use in a presentation, we will copy their web addresses and paste them as comments under this blog post.

Today’s PSA Fine Cutting Plan

Posted by: Mr. Rhys, TMS on: May 7, 2008

Today we are going to look at the PSA assembly on the projector, and take notes on what images we selected, and what might audio and images could be added to make our message stronger.

THE PSA ABOUT OUR PSA!

Mr. Marsano and I are going to be creating a PSA about our video production. A professional cameraman will be coming in today to film our process.

The main idea is to demonstrate why it is important for you guys to be able to communicate with other people using your words, along with images and audio. We think it’s important, because so many people try to communicate with you this way, and by learning how it’s done, you guys will understand them better, and you can even “talk back” with your own messages (like when we post our work to our website).

We want the tone of our PSA to be friendly and relaxed. We want to make you guys look good — just like when you delivered your voices and video in your PSA. So don’t worry about messing up, or saying something that doesn’t come out right. We’ll take it out! I’m going to be editing this video! We want to show you guys working on making your PSA messages as clear and persuasive as they can be by editing, making your message clear, and looking especially close today at making sure you have strong images and sounds to make the audience feel and act the way you want!

UNIT WORK

  • unit 1 – your video is on laptop 5 (Fryda & Sonia), and the original desktop (Justin & Maria)
  • unit 2 – your video is on laptop 10 (George & Elijah), and the original machine (Katherine & Mohammad)
  • unit 3 – your video is on laptop 6 (Illeanel & Angelisse), and the original desktop
  • unit 4 – your video is on laptop 11 (Tasnia & Devon), and the original desktop (Sean & Dianelly)

Even closer…

Since we last convened before break, our video editing is almost entirely done and our four units have finished the bulk of their work. I’m very proud of you! We have a series of PSAs that I’m confident are the best this school has ever produced. Global warming is a profound issue for every person on this planet, and 4-302 has thrown itself into understanding and proposing solutions for this problem.

This whole project has been a great example of how technology and literacy and social studies can integrate across the curriculum. In fact, I view our efforts as one big literacy effort: defining a problem, a role, an audience, and a message. We’ll be getting ready in the next two weeks to finish off the project and to put the results on line here, where you can see all our hard work. So stay tuned!

PSA on Global Warming – Intro & Production Notes

Posted by: Mr. Rhys, TMS on: January 23, 2008

The Project

Class 4-302 will be producing a Public Service Announcement working in four “production units” of 4 students each. Each group will write a script, adapt it for the screen using storyboards, collect still images and video that strengthen their argument, and edit it together using iMovie.

This blog post, and the comments that follow will be used to develop and adjust the production as it develops. When the PSA is finished, it will be shown on this website, as well as the others in the PS 124 Online Learning Network.

What is a PSA?

Today we are going to learn about Public Service Announcements, also known as “PSA”s. PSAs are usually:

  • like a commercial
  • about 30 seconds long
  • not for a product, but for the public good, or helpful for everyone
  • about health and safety
  • to inform or educate the public

Here are a few examples:

The Ad Council links outline the main idea, audience, and how they hope to change people’s behavior.

Discussion

  • What were the main ideas of these PSAs?
  • Did the issues they brought up seem important? Why?
  • Will they change the way you behave?
  • What media (images and sounds) did they use to persuade you? (Were they sad/scary/happy/funny…? Did they present a lot of facts?)
  • What made these PSAs persuasive, or not persuasive?

Brainstorming for our PSA Scripts

  • Take 2 minutes to write about something you want to inform the public about.
  • In the next 2 minutes, make a list of the most important reasons why your specific issue is important for the public to care about.
  • Take 2 more minutes to list of some of the images or sounds you might use to persuade someone to do something about your issue. Think about some of the things we just saw in the examples. Will you try to appeal to people’s emotions, things they know about, or both?

Get Ready to Publish!

Posted by: mrmarsanosclass on: November 30, 2007

4-302 has been working on reports now for about a month. This coming Thursday we are going to have a grade-wide publishing party. You are invited! Drop by the third floor at the beginning of 6th period and visit Mrs. Caputo, Ms. Delaney, and Mr. Marsano. You’ll get to see all our work on display, and meet the authors, too!

Rabbits rule! There’s a lot you can learn about. Our authors chose to write on rabbits, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, race cars, basketball, the Great Wall of China, and many other fascinating topics. I’m personally fond of one topic in particular, can you guess which one?

See you on the third floor,

Mr. Marsano
