Today’s PSA Fine Cutting Plan

Posted by: Mr. Rhys, TMS on: May 7, 2008

Today we are going to look at the PSA assembly on the projector, and take notes on what images we selected, and what might audio and images could be added to make our message stronger.

THE PSA ABOUT OUR PSA!

Mr. Marsano and I are going to be creating a PSA about our video production. A professional cameraman will be coming in today to film our process.

The main idea is to demonstrate why it is important for you guys to be able to communicate with other people using your words, along with images and audio. We think it’s important, because so many people try to communicate with you this way, and by learning how it’s done, you guys will understand them better, and you can even “talk back” with your own messages (like when we post our work to our website).

We want the tone of our PSA to be friendly and relaxed. We want to make you guys look good — just like when you delivered your voices and video in your PSA. So don’t worry about messing up, or saying something that doesn’t come out right. We’ll take it out! I’m going to be editing this video! We want to show you guys working on making your PSA messages as clear and persuasive as they can be by editing, making your message clear, and looking especially close today at making sure you have strong images and sounds to make the audience feel and act the way you want!

UNIT WORK

  • unit 1 – your video is on laptop 5 (Fryda & Sonia), and the original desktop (Justin & Maria)

  • unit 3 – your video is on laptop 6 (Illeanel & Angelisse), and the original desktop

What a great day! Today we had the privilege of working alongside a PROFESSIONAL camera operator and documentary filmmaker (in addition to Mr. Rhys, or course!). It was a real treat to see how he worked.

At PS 124 we have always prided ourselves on giving our students a professional outlook on the discipline of filmmaking: we discuss and plan rigorously before we ever touch the camera, just like professionals do. Today we got to see how a professional filmmaker uses a camera. Mr. Moorfoot moved around constantly and confidently, even though he was new to our environment. He was able to get up very close to us without distracting us because he was so focussed and so quiet! It really gave me an appreciation for the work he does. Also, it proved all along what I and Mr. Rhys have been saying: the best filmmakers are excellent, clear thinkers and are great at solving problems as they come up.

Here’s to Mr. Rhys for bringing his colleague along. Thank you!

Mr. Marsano
