Group Script Writing for PSA on Rechargeable Batteries
Posted by: Mr. Rhys, TMS on: January 4, 2010
We are making a public service announcement (PSA) about recycling rechargeable batteries
The messages we want to share are:
- where are rechargeable batteries
- laptops, cell phones and home phones, handheld games, ipods, cars
- how to recycle old rechargeable batteries
- where to recycle rechargeable batteries
- at stores that recycle them for you (Radio Shack, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Home Depot, Whole Foods — see http://call2recycle.com)
- why you should recycle old batteries
- because they have chemicals in them that we don’t want in our landfills
- those chemicals can get into our oceans, our air, or our drinking water, soil, and plants and animals we eat
- if we eat those plants that have chemicals in them they can get in our bodies, which can cause brain damage, lead poisoning, which can cause you to be hospitalized.
A PSA makes your audience want to DO something that is good for the public. We have no more than 30 seconds to make them want to do something.
What we want our audience to do:
- recycle rechargeable batteries in a special place
How are we going to convince them:
- show them how they can feel more safe
- use a serious/nervous/guilty/ashamed TONE with a funny part
- example: A person that throws away their rechargeable battery could be responsible for: starting a fire, or making someone sick, — because that battery could get crushed or break apart in the garbage or landfill and get into our water, soil, air and food.
IDEAS for our Script
- Have Elijah appear as a Rechargeable Battery Fairy
- A fly (or some fairy or make-believe character) goes into the garbage and says — “Not so fast, you have to recycle those batteries responsibly! You are only hurting yourself and other people!”
